Atelier Lapchi Hosts GoodWeave Focus Group

Atelier Lapchi in Los Angeles was proud to host a dynamic focus group working to end child labor and exploitation in the carpet industry. With the aim of raising awareness and support in the Los Angeles design community, Kristi Nelson of KMNelson Design teamed up with Nina Smith, the Executive Director of GoodWeave and Atelier Lapchi to kick off a high energy think tank on June 20th, 2013.

Since 1995, GoodWeave has been on the forefront of the nonprofit fight to rescue, educate and rehabilitate over 1,000,000 thousand of “carpet kids” from enslavement.

After absorbing an in depth presentation by Nina Smith of the facts and abusive child labor practices rampant in the handmade carpet industry, a potent mix of LA interior design talents, rug industry leaders, public relations professionals, publishing and business consulting brains, tackled the facts and debated long and short term initiatives to make ethical carpet sourcing and specifying and outreach a priority.

Moderated by Kristi Nelson and Bill Frack of LEK Consulting, the guests discussed the issues of child abuse, human trafficking, and the human cost of unchecked labor practice. Aware that simply writing a check is not enough, and using their pooled contacts, industry and multi media savvy and out of the box thinking, the team are forming plans to effect change in our industry – and have a great time doing it! We will be hearing more from this committed and compassionate group in the months to come.

Many of our clients, or creatives we admire, have developed their own signature palettes. The work they create, and the colors they choose, make or made them, distinctive and recognizable. An individual personality’s artistic vision has often projected itself onto contemporary culture, going on to effect market trends.

The connection between color and commerce is nothing new, but is always fascinating to observe.  Color change is a major player in making what we own feel obsolete, and what we are offered feel like a “must have”. The zeitgeist in product design is that perfect combination of what is familiar enough to be accessible, but “new” enough to excite and define. It’s the Pavlovian response made commercial, and that is big business.

Although not immune to the siren call of mass-market taste and consumption, Lapchi developed its color palette range at the service of our individual clients vision, through their bespoke design commissions or a select custom product line. Using our small pot dying method, color can be altered and reinvented as needed, expressing exactly the pulse of the client or project.

As a result, the Lapchi color box is more similar to an artist palette than a hardware paint chart or an industry standard color range. We dye the color as we envision it so our palette is endless. A much-heralded color such as Pantone Emerald Green #17-5641 therefore can be as subtly varied as actual emeralds are.

Lapchi paired with the Santa Monica Museum of Art to launch the world premier exhibition of  Milton Glaser for Lapchi: An Exploration of Pattern Making and Color Effects in Textiles.

This special exhibition of carpets graced SMMoA’s main gallery from March 23 -29, and treated Los Angeles to a rare look at a venerated American artist, reaching new heights in a new medium.

The Milton Glaser for Lapchi Carpet Collection is very much a refection of the artist – a celebratory visual portrait of interest and enthusiasm woven in silk and wool. Lapchi hand wove sixteen of Mr. Glaser’s striking patterns, for the first time expressing this ground braking artist’s vision in luxurious and nuanced textile surfaces. This is a numbered, limited edition line of fine art carpets – a joyous meditation on form color and perception.

Inspirations range from Viennese Art Nouveau, celestial and geometric musings, to exuberant floral collages and mystical tantric mandalas. The color palettes and combinations are both fearless and subtly rich, and, like a fine art painting – each color was custom mixed by Lapchi in Nepal for this collection.  Employing Lapchi’s arsenal of weaving, dying and finishing techniques, Milton Glaser for Lapchi is a compendium of exacting details and luxury fiber, pitched to the service of cutting edge design.

Milton Glaser is perhaps most widely recognized as the creator of such culturally graphic icons as: the “I (Heart) NY”, the Bob Dylan 1967 Greatest Hits psychedelic graphic, the cover artwork for Tony Kushner’s Pulitzer prize winning play “Angels in America” and the signature brand logo for Trump Vodka. Mr.
Glaser founded New York Magazine, and created the interior design scheme for the Rainbow Room in New York’ s Rockefeller Plaza along with lifetime spent designing hundreds of graphic and commercial arts projects, architectural schemes, logos, teaching, and writing numerous books. He is considered one of the most influential and renowned creative’s working in the world today.

The Santa Monica Museum of Art is nestled in Southern California’s largest art gallery and cultural complex. Visionary director Elsa Longhauser enthusiastically embraced the opportunity to display Milton Glaser’s ground breaking new collection, and rescheduled two established exhibitions to make it happen. Milton Glaser, as a tribute to SMMOA and the exhibition, designed a new logo font that Lapchi wove and presented to Elsa Longhauser at the gala opening.

Lapchi, Milton Glaser and SMMOA is a formidable triumvirate of taste, talent, and expansive vision. The exhibition did not disappoint, and the galleries were full of designers, artists and art lovers.

The collaboration with Milton is the kind of creative endeavor that makes Lapchi a preeminent hand woven custom carpet company. To conceive, launch and realize a collection of this caliber and scope is not only exciting and exceptional, but is also speaks of a company wide belief in furthering artistic growth and cultural exploration. The Milton Glaser for Lapchi Collection is in Atelier Lapchi, Portland, Oregon, for July and August.  Primary color ways of all 16 designs are on display until September when the collection travels to New York. Included is Fruits of Labor, designed by Milton in honor of the work of GoodWeave.org in exposing child labor in the rug business, a fundamental concern of both Lapchi and our clients.

Thursday evening, July 19th, Atelier Lapchi with Gray Magazine, Eastside Distilling and the PBDA, hosts the design community in it’s own personal exploration of this unique collection. Joining the Portland host team is Andrew Neave, Lapchi Artistic Director and co-manager of Lapchi’s Los Angeles Showroom who worked with Mr. Glaser in the interpretations of his graphic and artistic choices.

The collection is available “to order” at Atelier Lapchi showrooms in Chicago, Cleveland, Los Angeles and Portland, and this fall through select Lapchi Private Client Showrooms across the US.

One of our longest journeys to fruition is complete; Atelier Lapchi Portland’s door is now open

It’s a glorious fall weekend in Oregon. The streets of NW Portland are full of people riding bikes, walking dogs and heading towards the hilly trails to the west of our new showroom, trails so close you can see the dense evergreens of the park and the beautiful homes nearby. Also to the west and east of our showroom rise both the historic and Leed Certified condominiums of the Pearl District, the Park Blocks and the Willamette Riverfront. Which of the people walking into our showroom and gasping delightedly live there? We are finding out…

Fall Markets in LA can be fun, but “Fall” with its variegated warm coloration, may visually exist only within showrooms in the Pacific Design Center.

2011 Fall Market Variation

Staging allows designers to visually coordinate entire homes while working comfortably in our Atelier. Samples line the walls and are easy to transport. Small stacks of standard size carpets demonstrate technique and are available for purchase yet “Bespoke” is Lapchi’s specialty — Atelier Lapchi was designed to facilitate interesting and challenging projects requiring custom production.

Lapchi’s “Quick-Ship” Carpet Program

Custom “Bespoke” hand-made carpets are the core of Lapchi’s brand and focus. A completely hand-made custom carpet consisting of millions of individually tied knots of Tibetan wool and fine silk simply takes time to conceive and weave. There are no shortcuts.

Lapchi recognizes that many of our design clients assume responsibility for projects that require shorter delivery times. We created the “Quick-Ship” Program to help designers compete for this business without sacrificing quality and beauty.

We originally committed to having twenty-two of our most popular “made-to-measure” carpet designs available or on-loom in order to shorten fulfillment times. Updated recently, we will be adding two carpets from our newest collection, the Lapchi André Arbus Design Collection to the Quick-Ship program based on their popularity.
